even if it's something as silly as this:

i'm pretty sure i threw my keys away last thursday. it was late, i was tired, and upset at my bank. i wasn't thinking clearly. i checked the garbage several times. though, i did not dump out--i merely looked deep inside it. the garbage has since been taken to the dump. thus, if my keys were in fact inside the garbage, they too are at the dump. this bums me out.
